MG Motors has launched the all-new MG4 Electric in the European market. The compact, all-electric hatchback marks a new milestone along the growth trajectory for the brand. The MG4 Electric is the most important car to date for the brand. This is because it is the first of a series of models to use MG’s new intelligent MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) platform.
The MG4 Electric looks striking and delivers impressively compact dimensions. Furthermore, MG claims it will offer excellent driving behaviour, high efficiency, innovative ADAS systems and great usability.
In the European market, MG4 Electric will be available in 3 variants. These are – Standard, Comfort and Luxury. The base MG4 Electric Standard will come with a rear-mounted motor delivering 170 PS, a battery capacity of 51 kWh and a 350 km WLTP cycle range. Meanwhile, the Comfort and Luxury will each deliver 204 PS and have a 64 kWh battery capacity. Thanks to the larger battery pack, the MG4 Electric Comfort provides a range of up to 450 km as per the WLTP cycle.
The MG4 Electric gets a striking design outlook with a host of sharp detailing. At the front, it gets tilted upright indicators and a 28 LED headlight with six vertical fibre-optic stripes. The influence of these lines continues on to the MG4 Electric’s LED taillights as well. The taillight comes with 172 LEDs and a rear light strip that stretches across the width of the MG4 Electric.
On the sides, we get to see its aerodynamic design, which MG claims offers an air resistance coefficient between 0.27 and 0.287, depending on the model version. The MG4 Electric gets 17-inch alloy wheels in a Tomahawk design and a two-tone finish on the Comfort and Luxury models. The alloy wheels are combined with low-rolling resistance tyres from Continental.
The MG4 Electric will be available in a total of 7 colour options. These are – Pebble Black, Andes Grey, Medal Silver, Diamond Red, Brighton Blue and Fizzy Orange.
On the inside, the MG4 Electric sports a minimalistic interior design. MG says this emphasises the core principles of simplicity, technology and quality. The cockpit design maximises the available space with light, lean instrument panels and control elements. The floating design of the centre console also creates more space and integrates various useful functions.
The MG4 Electric offers plenty of room for up to five passengers as well as numerous storage options. Some of the interior highlights include a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a floating 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The latter controls the MG iSMART connectivity system, which also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The boot capacity of the MG4 Electric is 350 litres. Furthermore, after folding the rear seats, one can extend it to 1,165 litres.
The MG4 Electric boasts a 50:50 weight distribution, which the brand claims delivers outstanding handling and driving pleasure. Like premium European cars, the MG4 Electric uses MacPherson front axles and a complex 5-link single-wheel suspension for the rear axle. All this is paired to a Bosch dual-pinion electric power steering with 3 configurable modes – Light, Standard and Sport.
Meanwhile, the Continental braking system and all-around disc brakes provide excellent deceleration. The braking system also offers 3 modes – Comfort, Normal and Sport. MG claims the MG4 Electric can stop from 100 kmph in less than 37 metres. The MG4 Electric’s motor is also capable of braking and recovering energy at various levels.
