Volvo reveals pure electric EX90 SUV

Swedish carmaker Volvo has unveiled its flagship all-electric SUV. The EX-90 is equivalent to the company’s XC90. The EX90 is bigger in size than the XC90 but sits closer to the ground. It will be the third all-electric vehicle after the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge.

Design of the Volvo EX90 SUV

Coming to the design of the SUV, the EX90 gets the familiar Volvo touch. It retains styling elements like the Thor’s hammer headlamps, blacked out grille, flush door handles, 22-inch alloys and split tail lamps with C shaped LED lights.

On the sides, the SUV gets multiple character lines, making it looks slightly similar to the XC90. Volvo claims to have a low drag coefficient of 0.29Cd for the SUV.

On the inside, the EX90 gets a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system. It gets 5G connectivity with features like over-the-air updates. The EX90 also gets a panoramic sunroof and a Bowers&Wilkins Audio system with speakers integrated into the seat’s headrests. The seats get Nodico upholstery which is claimed to be made from recycled materials. According to Volvo, the EX90 uses 15% recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminium and 48kg of recycled plastics along with bio-based materials.

Electronic aids on the Volvo EX90

Volvo has offered a host of electronic aids on the EX90. One of these is a sophisticated LIDAR system that gets its data from 8 cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors. These are located all over the car and help the car detect even the smallest of objects at a distance of 600 ft during the day or night at highway speed. Other features on the car include capacitive steering and camera-based gaze sensors that can determine if the driver is alert or distracted.

Powertrain of the Volvo EX90

The EX90 comes in a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. It gets two power outputs – base 408 BHP and 770 Nm, and a higher-spec 517 BHP & 910 Nm variant. Both these have a n electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h. According to Volvo the EX90 will deliver a 600 km all-electric range (WLTP cycle) on a single charge. The car gets a 111 kW battery pack which also is capable of fast charging. The 10 – 80 per cent charge in said to be below 30 mins.
