Volvo has officially rebranded its popular XC40 Recharge electric SUV as the EX40, aligning with its global strategy to standardize the naming convention for its electric vehicle lineup. The rebranding is part of Volvo’s broader initiative to streamline its EV offerings, which also includes the EX30 and EX90 models. The EX40 retains the same mechanical specifications as its predecessor, featuring a 69kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor that delivers 238 bhp of power and 420 Nm of torque. The SUV boasts a range of 592 km as per ICAT standards and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Features

In terms of features, the Volvo EX40 comes equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay support, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 250 W 8-speaker sound system, wireless phone charging, an air purifier, a powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control. Additionally, the EX40 now includes a 360-degree camera and a Harman Kardon sound system, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Volvo has also introduced several safety features in the EX40, including seven airbags, a rear parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot detection. The company is offering an 8-year battery warranty, a 3-year comprehensive car warranty, a 3-year service package, a 3-year roadside assistance, and a 5-year subscription to digital services.

Competition

The EX40’s launch comes at a time when Volvo faces stiff competition in the premium electric SUV segment from established brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, as well as newer entrants like Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Despite the competitive landscape, Volvo remains confident in the EX40’s appeal, citing its combination of performance, features, and safety enhancements.

Volvo India is also offering discounts of up to INR 5.05 lakh on the remaining stock of the XC40 Recharge single-motor variant, while the twin-motor version has already sold out. For those seeking a more powerful alternative, the C40 Recharge coupe-SUV is available with a twin-motor setup delivering 408 hp and a larger 78 kWh battery, now offered with benefits of up to INR 1.05 lakh.
