Volvo Cars has announced a new naming strategy for its electric vehicles (EVs) and is doing away with the ‘Recharge’ suffix. Volvo is renaming the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models to EX40 and EC40, respectively.
The renaming of these popular EVs is part of Volvo’s broader ambition to become an all-electric car manufacturer by 2030. In the future, Volvo will not have ICE models that would need the suffix ‘Recharge’. The new names also align with the company’s current and future EV line-up, which includes the EX30 and EX90.
In addition to the new names, the EX40 and EC40 are now available with a new Performance software package. This package increases the power output of the range-topping dual-motor powertrain to 436 hp, making these models more powerful than the Mercedes-AMG A45 S hatchback. While Volvo has promised “faster acceleration” for these models, it has not specified how much the 0-100 kmph time, which previously stood at 4.7sec, has been reduced. The impact of the power increase on the range of the two cars is also unclear.
The single-motor EX40 and EC40 will have a maximum range of 577 km and 583 km, respectively. Both models are expected to go on sale in a staggered manner starting this May. This suggests that the India launch can be expected during the second half of this year.
