Volkswagen’s Polo says Goodbye to the Indian market

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Volkswagen has announced that the brand will be discontinuing the VW Polo hot hatchback from the Indian market. Volkswagen entered the Indian market 12 years ago with the VW Polo, which became an instant hit among car enthusiasts. However, as all good things must come to an end, Volkswagen has also bid adieu to the Polo hatchback.

Volkswagen Polo Tribute

Volkswagen started producing the Polo hatchback at the Volkswagen production plant in Chakan, Pune, back in 2009. The brand unveiled the Polo to the public in 2010 at the Auto Expo in Delhi. In its 12 years of service, the Volkswagen Polo also received many titles. These include the “Most fun-to-drive hatchback”, “An enthusiasts’ car”, and also the “Hot hatch”. In addition to this, Polo has also been the idle chatter thanks to marketing campaigns such as Newspaper with a Hole and Respect – it’s a GT. Even though it is gone, the Polo will always remind us of a fun-to-drive, German-engineered hatch with a balance of performance as well as efficiency.

Volkswagen Polo – Legend Edition

Recently, Volkswagen introduced the final edition of the Polo called “Legend” to pay tribute to the legendary hot hatchback. The Legend Edition features side body graphics, black boot garnish and a sportier black roof spoiler. The car also comes with a LEGEND badging on the boot and fender, differentiating itself from the standard vehicle. The Volkswagen Polo Legend edition comes with an ex-showroom price of INR 10.25 lakh ex-showroom. Volkswagen will retail the special edition commemorative model in limited numbers through Volkswagen’s dealerships across India.

Volkswagen Polo – Powertrain

The Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition is based on the GT TSI variant. Powering the Polo Legend is a 1.0-litre TSI petrol three-cylinder engine that produces 110 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque. The motor comes with a 6-speed automatic torque converter gearbox on the Polo Legend. Thanks to the globally acclaimed Volkswagen TSI technology, the powertrain offers a perfect balance between power and efficiency.
