Volkswagen has announced that the brand has commenced production of the Taigun SUV in the Indian market. The Volkswagen Taigun is the first product in the Indian market under the India 2.0 Project. With the ‘Start of Production,’ Volkswagen also announced that pre-bookings for the Volkswagen Taigun are also now open. Customers can book the Volkswagen Taigun through the brand’s online and offline retail channels. Also, Volkswagen announced that the brand would commence deliveries on the Taigun from September 2021 in the Indian market.
The Volkswagen Taigun comes with a typical Volkswagen design with timeless lines and boxy SUV styling. The SUV features a horizontal grille with chrome slats that integrates well with the headlamps. The Taigun features a chunky chrome applique on the bumper, a wide air dam and a silver skid plate. The SUV also comes with a clamshell bonnet design that comes with a healthy dose of character lines. The Taigun features a black applique on the rear taillamp cluster giving the car a contemporary look.
The Volkswagen Taigun underpins the Indianised version of the MQB-A0 platform, the MQB-A0-IN. The platform allows both safety and space on the interiors. Volkswagen will produce the Taigun with the MQB-A0-IN platform at Volkswagen’s state-of-the-art production plant in Chakan, Pune. The brand has managed to achieve a localisation level of up to 95 per cent and still maintain German engineering standards.
Powering the Taigun will be the Volkswagen Group’s renowned TSI family engine. The brand revealed that the Taigun will come with two engine options. A 1.0-litre engine and a 1.5-litre engine. The 1.0-litre engine is likely to be a three-cylinder Turbo-Petrol motor, making around 115 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque. The larger 1.5-litre engine will be a four-cylinder unit that produces 150 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. The engines will be paired to 6-speed Automatic and 6-speed Manual gearbox on the 1.0-litre engine and 7-speed DSG and 6-speed Manual gearbox on the 1.5-litre engine.
