Volkswagen Taigun bags 5-star crash test safety rating from Global NCAP

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Under the Global NCAP test protocol, Volkswagen Taigun has scored a perfect 5-star safety rating. Its sibling, Skoda Kushaq, also received the same 5-star result. Both these SUVs use the same MQB-A0-IN platform of the SKODA Auto Volkswagen India Group. This makes the VW Taigun (and the Skoda Kushaq) the first car to achieve a 5-star rating in both the Adult and Child safety categories.

Volkswagen Taigun Adult Occupant Safety

As per the report by Global NCAP, the passenger compartment, as well as the footwell of the Volkswagen Taigun, remained stable in the frontal offset test. The test dummy showed good protection of the head and neck of both the driver and passenger. The driver’s chest was rated as adequate, while the passenger got good protection.

In the side impact test, the car offered good protection to the head, abdomen and pelvis. Chest protection was marginal. In the more severe side pole impact test, the Taigun provided good protection to the head and pelvis, adequate protection to the abdomen and marginal protection to the chest. The car scored 29.64 points out of a maximum of 34.

Volkswagen Taigun 3 Child Safety

The Taigun (along with the Kushaq) is now the first car in India to score a perfect 5-star result in Child Safety. The car secured 42 out of a maximum of 49 points.

In the frontal impact, the child seat for the three-year-old was installed rearward facing using the ISOFIX child seat mounts. The restraint offered full protection by preventing head exposure during the frontal impact. The child seat for the 18-month-old was installed rearward facing as well, and it, too, was able to avoid head exposure during the frontal impact, thereby offering full protection.

Both the child restraints offered full side impact protection in the side impact test.

Additionally, the car offers 3-point belts in all seating positions as standard in all versions. However, the front passenger Airbag can’t be disabled. This means a rear-facing child seat can’t be installed on the first passenger seat.
