Volkswagen has revealed a unique Taigun pickup concept. This innovative vehicle is the result of a student project under the Skill India initiative, spearheaded by Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. The project showcases the creativity and technical prowess of the students involved, transforming the popular Taigun SUV into a rugged and versatile pickup truck.
The Taigun pickup concept was developed by a team of Mechatronics students, guided by experienced professionals from Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. This initiative is part of the company’s commitment to fostering new talent and providing hands-on experience in the automotive industry. The project took nine months to complete, encompassing various stages from concept finalization to market analysis, research and development, procurement, and final testing.
The transformation of the Taigun SUV into a pickup truck involved significant modifications. The vehicle retains the original five-seater cabin but features an extended rear overhang to accommodate the cargo bed. This design choice gives the pickup a distinctive look, blending the practicality of a truck with the comfort and style of an SUV.
Several parts of the pickup were sourced from the VW Virtus sedan, which shares the same MQB A0 IN platform as the Taigun. The project also utilized 3D-printed components, highlighting the innovative approach taken by the students. The pickup is equipped with specialized accessories such as underbody protection, studded tires, ambient lighting, and roof-mounted lights, enhancing its rugged appeal.
This project is part of the Dual Vocational Training program at the SAVWIPL Academy, a flagship initiative launched in 2011. Modeled after Germany’s vocational system, this full-time 3.5-year course aims to develop young talents for the automobile industry. The program emphasizes technological creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for future challenges in the automotive sector.
While the Taigun pickup is a one-off concept and not intended for production, it serves as a testament to the potential of student-led projects in driving innovation. Volkswagen had previously hinted at a Taigun-based pickup truck with the Tarok concept, unveiled at the 2018 Sao Paulo Auto Show. Such monocoque pickup trucks are popular in markets like South America and South Africa, and the Taigun pickup concept could inspire future developments in this segment.
