Volkswagen’s most ambitious car in India was without any doubt the Polo GTI. The hot hatch which was launched a few years back came to India with an astronomical price tag of over INR 25 lakh, but still managed to sell beyond 100 units. But eventually, the demand faded and the leftover stock was sold with massive discounts. Now, with the Polo moving to it’s 6th generation, the German brand is planning to bring in the new Polo GTI to India.
This car currently is based on the MQB platform and Volkswagen is finding it difficult to make some sense out in the pricing department. If brought as is, the new Polo GTI could be more expensive than the older model. Volkswagen is also considering to build a India-spec Polo GTI based on the MQB A0 IN platform which is being developed for new generation Volkswagen & Skoda cars, but this will take more than 2 years to materialize.
Powering the new Volkswagen Polo GTI is a 2.0L, turbocharged petrol motor producing 197 BHP of power and 320 Nm of torque matched to a DSG automatic gearbox. The brand claims a o-100 kmph dash in under 7 seconds.
No doubt the Polo GTI is an expensive affair, but ask existing owners or those who have driven it, they will ensure you that it is by far the most fun hot hatch sold in the country.
All this, is quite some time away from reality.
