Volkswagen Passat B8 coming to India next year

Volkswagen will launch the next-generation Passat in India next year. Codenamed as the B8, this is the 8th generation Passat and carries a completely different and sharper design language than it’s predecessor.

The new Passat is slightly shorter in length, wider and a little lower in height compared to the outgoing model. The new Passat is based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform and is also 85 kg lighter than the previous generation. Exterior design is sharp and flat, with clean crease lines running across the entire length of the car. A chunky chrome grille connecting the headlamps adds to the premium feel. Headlamps get projectors with LED DRLs and even the tail lamps get LEDs.

On the inside, the dashboard is all new and the interiors are available beige and black. It gets a 3-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom, MID in the instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, electric seats, rear AC vents, etc.

The most likely engine to debut in the Indian market would be a 2.0L tubocharged diesel motor mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Volkswagen claims that the new model will have its fuel efficiency improved by 20%.

Safety features will include ABS, EBD, BA, airbags, emergency assist, city emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, traffic jam assist, trailer assist etc.

Expect the Passat to be priced in India close to Rs. 25 – 30 lakh.
