Volkswagen is set to launch the Golf GTi in India this year. The hot hatchback will be imported via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route, and pre-bookings are expected to open this month.
The Golf GTi is a performance-oriented version of the standard Golf, featuring a slim front fascia with slim LED headlamps, C-shaped LED taillights, a roof spoiler, dual exhausts, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The sporty hatchback gets an all-black interior with a 12.9-inch touchscreen in the center, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and a digital instrument cluster. It is powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 245 PS and 370 Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The Golf GTi can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kmph.
The Golf GTi is expected to be priced from INR 52 lakh (ex-showroom). Only 250 units are expected to be available in India, making it a highly sought-after model. Some Volkswagen dealerships are already accepting offline orders for the Golf GTi.
Once launched the Golf GTi will be the most powerful hatch in the country. The closest competition to the Golf GTi in terms of price will be the Mini Cooper S which is priced at INR 44 lakh ex-showroom. The Mini is powered by a 2.0L petrol engine that produces 201 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
The Golf GTi has a huge fan following among petrol heads. We expect the 250 units go off the shelves very quickly. Volkswagen should consider bringing it in larger quantities in the CKD form soon.
