What is it?
The company had been showing a baby Defender model which is likely to feature an identical design and 4X4 technology as the bigger Defender, in its roadmap presentations for long.
However, the first test mule of this upcoming model clarifies that it will undoubtedly look like the Defender. It will be a smaller version, featuring the same design aesthetics as the current Defender, and it will be based on the EMA platform.
Size and dimensions expectations
As per the online reports, it will measure 4.6 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height. While these dimensions are significantly smaller than the current model, it will still appear muscular and butch.
The main design aspect, which is already visible in the spy shots, is the raised ride height. Moreover, the smaller dimensions will make it less bulky and easier to live with in the city boundaries.
An all-electric model?
The company officials have already confirmed that the ‘Baby Defender’ will use the upcoming EMA platform. This architecture is also going to be used on the next-gen Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport.
Since the company has already confirmed that the EMA platform is all-electric only, the future of the ‘Baby Defender’ also seems to be electric only.
As per the available details, the EMA models will feature an 800V architecture, which will be able to support rapid charging up to 350 kW, making it one of the strongest EV platforms in the market.
While it is not officially confirmed yet, the previous plans of Land Rover to manufacture the EMA models in Chennai with the help of Tata have been cancelled.
As per the reports, JLR did not find the vendor parts quality as per their standards, and hence, the brand has called the progress off.
However, the batteries will certainly be made at the Tata’s UK-based factory of JLR, which will be further supplied to the production plant. As of now, the EMA platform production plant is under assessment for the location.
