TVS XL moped will continue with BSVI engines

Written by Nizam Shaikh

India’s third-largest two-wheeler manufacturer, TVS Motor Company is the sole manufacturer in the moped segment today. The TVS XL moped is still a popular two-wheeler in the Indian market and 8,80,000 units were sold in the domestic market in fiscal year 2018-2019 and 16,000 units were exported. TVS Motor Company has now confirmed that they will continue to sell the moped as it will get an upgrade to comply with the new BSVI emission norms, enforced from April 2020.

Many small capacity diesel car manufacturers and entry-level petrol engine manufacturers are moving away as the cost implications of upgrading the engines are too high but TVS Motors plans to stand strong and continue with the TVS XL moped in India.

The top-spec TVS XL Heavy-Duty i-Touch model is powered by a 4-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 99.7cc petrol engine with a maximum output of 4.3 BHP of power and 6.5 Nm of torque mated to a single speed gearbox with a wet type centrifugal clutch and a roller chain secondary drive.

The moped has drum brakes on both the front and rear wheels and has a wheelbase of 1228mm and a fuel tank capacity of 4-litres. It rides on a spring type hydraulic telescopic front fork and a hydraulic type twin shock absorbers on the rear swing arm. The moped weighs 86 kg and can carry a payload of up to 130 kg.

TVS also provides its moped with a 36 month or 36,000 km warranty. The moped comes in seven different colour options which include Black, Red, Blue, Green, Copper Shine, Titanium Grey and a new Mineral Purple. The XL 100 Heavy-Duty i-Touch start comes with a self-starter and USB mobile charging facility.
