TVS Motor Company is reportedly working on an electric version of its popular XL 100 moped. The company has filed trademark applications for two names, TVS XL EV and E-XL, hinting at the imminent arrival of an electric variant.
The TVS XL 100 moped, one of TVS’ longest-running models, is currently the only petrol-powered moped available for purchase in India. Its price ranges between Rs 44,999 – Rs 59,695 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The trademark filings suggest that TVS is exploring the possibility of a battery-powered XL model too which could go against the recently launched e-Luna from Kinetic Green.
TVS has been successful with its iQube range and appears to be expanding its electric two-wheeler portfolio. The company filed these patents in January of this year. However, it is still early days for the E-XL / XL EV project, and there are no official details or company confirmation regarding the same.
The electric moped market in India currently has only one player – the Kinetic e-Luna. Launched in February 2024, the E Luna is priced between Rs 64,990 – Rs 74,990 (ex-showroom, Delhi). It boasts a range of 110km on a single full charge and is aimed at the commercial market.
There are other products in the segment that service the last-mile delivery industry. However, these brands are not established players and do not have a history of making automobiles. The entry of a trusted brand like TVS will surely be beneficial for the consumers.
While the exact specifications and features of the TVS XL EV / E-XL are yet to be revealed, the electric moped market in India is set for an exciting phase with the entry of a new player.
