In what is a massive update in the motorcycle industry worldwide, Triumph Motorcycles has revealed their all-new entry level motorcycles jointly developed with Bajaj and manufactured in India. The two motorcycles revealed today include the Speed 400 & Scrambler 400 X. Both of these motorcycles will be launched in India on July 5th, 2023 and will be sold worldwide. For reference, consider this alliance similar to Bajaj-KTM & TVS-BMW.
The engine on these bikes is called an all-new TR-Series engine. Powering this motorcycle is an all-new 398.15cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve motor producing 40 PS of power @ 8000 RPM and 37.5 Nm of torque @ 6500 RPM matched to a 6-speed gearbox coupled to a slipper assist clutch. This is a Euro-5 compliant engine and is future proof. It features concealed liquid-cooling tech and comes with machined cooling fins. Adding a modern premium touch, the bike also gets ride-by-wire tech for better throttle response and better ride control.
Both the bikes will feature a 16,000 km service interwal and will come with a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.
While the engine remains the same, the specifications of both the bikes are different. Along with the engine, both bikes also have the same 13-litre tank capacity.
The Speed 400 measures 2056mm in length, 795mm in width, 1075mm in height, 790mm of seat height, 1377mm in wheelbase and has a kerb weight of 170 kg. The Scrambler 400 X measures 2117mm in length, 825mm in width, 1190mm in height, 835mm in seat height, 1418mm in wheelbase and has a kerb weight of 179 kg. Both bikes ride on an all-new model-specific chassis, bolt-on rear subframe and aluminium swingarm.
Also, both motorcycles have a 17″ rear wheel, but the Speed 400 has a 17″ front and the Scrambler 400 X has a 19″ front wheel. Both are using 10-spoke alloy wheel design.
At the front, the Speed 400 has a 43mm USD BPF front fork with 140mm wheel travel and the rear gas charged monoshock has 130mm wheel travel. The Scrambler 400 X comes with a 43mm USD BPF front fork with 150mm wheel travel and the rear monoshock also has 150mm wheel travel.
230mm disc brake is common to both bikes at the rear end, but the front is a 300mm disc on the Speed 400 & 320mm disc on the Scrambler 400 X. Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres for the Speed 400 & Karoo Street for the Scrambler 400 X.
Features on both the bikes includes a multi-function LCD screen coupled to an analogue speedometer, all-LED lighting, engine immobiliser, dual-channel ABS with switchable feature on the Scrambler 400 X, switchable traction control, torque-assist clutch, sculpted tank with Scrambler & Roadster styling, knee recess, upswept exhaust, etc. Triumph would be offering 25 genuine accessories on the bikes.
