Toyota reveals new 2.8L diesel hybrid engine

Toyota has showcased a new hybrid powertrain. The Japanese carmaker demonstrated a diesel mild hybrid vehicle (MHEV) based on the Hilux platform.

Currently, Toyota offers hybrid tech on its petrol engines. However, the company is looking at improving the fuel economy of diesel vehicles using this technology. In places with a lack of electric infrastructure or in emerging markets like Africa, there are substantial gains to be made with a diesel MHEV vehicle.

Hence, Toyota displayed the Hilux MHEV at the 7th round of WRC in Kenya. In terms of visual changes, the vehicle is identical to the regular Hilux save for the new decals. No changes are made on the inside as well.

The car was driven by 4-time WRC champion, Juha Kankkunen. The Finnish driver was supported by Jimmi Gathu, a local actor.

According to Kankkunen, this technology could offer benefits in terms of fuel savings and less CO2 emissions as well.

Powertrain details of the Toyota Hilux MHEV

Toyota has offered a 48V hybrid system along with 2.8-litre diesel engine. There is an integrated starter / generator (ISG) along with a 48V battery. According to the Japanese carmaker, this system will offer a fuel efficiency gain of up to 10 percent. Toyota also says this will be for short trips, and as the distance increases, the percentage gain would reduce.

The engine tuning along with the gearbox will remain unchanged.

Could diesel MHEV be a popular choice?

As both the Hilux and the Fortuner are based on the same platform, it is likely that the same engine would be compatible on the later. This means, Toyota could offer the hybrid on the SUV and it could be able to price it lower due to lesser taxes on hybrid vehicles.
