Toyota reveals Fortuner Flexy Fuel, can run on 100% bioethanol

Toyota has revealed a new Fortuner prototype. This time, an updated version of the popular Fortuner was displayed at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). According to Toyota, this car can run on 100 percent bioethanol.

Fortuner Flexy Fuel : More Details

Dubbed as the Fortuner Flexy Fuel, this prototype Fortuner is capable of running on bioethanol. To this end, the car has had substantial modifications done to the engine and the fuel system. It can run on 100% Ethanol or E-100.

The Toyota Fortuner comes with the robust 2TR-FE 2.7-litre petrol. The same was modified to run on 100 percent bioethanol. The list of updated components include fuel intake system, fuel pump and fuel tank, spark plug as well as engine head amongst others. When running on E-100, this engine develops 161 BHP and 243 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 5-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.

Toyota had also displayed alongside an E-100 Corolla Cross and a Corolla Cross H2 concept that runs on hydrogen.

Toyota future vehicles

Back at the 2023 Auto Expo, Toyota had displayed many future ready vehicles. These included Pure Electric (BEV) Vehicles like the bZ4X. This is the first model to use the new e-TNGA electric vehicle architecture developed in collaboration with Subaru. We also saw Hydrogen based vehicles like Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), Corolla Cross H2 Concept, and Fuel Cell System Module. Alongside this Toyota showcased other Electrified Vehicle (xEV) technology vehicles like Prius Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Corolla Altis Flex-Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FF-SHEV).

In terms of future fuels, Toyota has always been an advocate of exploring alternative fuels apart from just battery electric vehicles. To this end, the company has been exploring different tech like fuel cell, hydrogen and more.
