Toyota India is in the headlines again. It made headlines in February 2023 by selling two entirely different MPVs under the Innova brand. This was when Toyota reintroduced the Innova Crysta. Its predecessors – the first-gen Innova and Qualis were then discontinued when newer-gen models were brought in.
We understand the reason why Toyota is choosing to sell two models together. This was to differentiate between customers. First, the Innova Hycross will target private customers. All thanks to its car-like nature, longer features list and petrol hybrid tech. Then we have the Crysta has been a top choice in the fleet market since its introduction in 2016. This is because of its diesel engine and rugged nature.
Massive Pending Orders From Toyota India
As it stands, the newly launched Innova Crysta and the Innova Hycross have over 60,000 orders pending. Customers can have the Crysta only with a single powertrain. This is a 2.4-litre diesel mated to a five-speed manual gearbox – with two seating configurations. As per sources, we know that the Innova Crysta mainly targets fleet owners. But interestingly enough there have been a decent amount of bookings from private buyers as well. This is specifically for the ones that are chauffeur driven.
Demand High For Innova Hycross As Well
The Innova Hycross, on the other hand, arrived last November. As of now, it has gathered quite a number of bookings since then. With the deliveries of the Hycross in full swing, Toyota tells us that the top trims constitute a major chunk of orders. But with the ongoing global semiconductor shortage ramping up production has been one of the biggest challenges for Toyota. Thus, it is affecting the production of well-equipped ZX and ZX (O) trims of the Hycross, particularly. Thus leading to Toyota pausing bookings for these trims. Currently, the waiting period for these trims is stretching to over an astounding 24 months.
Toyota India Has Its Highest-Ever Order Backlog
As per reports, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has started a third shift in its plant. This aims at curbing the order backlog for the Innova twins and reducing the waiting period. Had the semiconductor chips situation been better, the company would have added the shift earlier to cater to the high demand.
