Toyota GR Supra will come with a manual gearbox

After years of rumours and speculations, Toyota confirms that the upcoming GR Supra will get a manual gearbox. Toyota shared the news with an official photo showing all three pedals of the sports car. Later, Toyota’s U.S. division also tweeted the same photo telling people to “Stay Tuned”.

The Japanese manufacturer says the new GR Supra will come “with a newly developed manual transmission, designed to offer a unique dynamic experience while meeting the demand of driving purists”. Discussions of a manual-gearbox-equipped Supra began in 2019, and it was only now when Toyota confirmed a new report from Japan. The report also mentions chassis upgrades and fewer ADAS systems. However, the company remains tight-lipped about other changes and only confirms the manual gearbox.

The GR Supra will continue to use the BMW Z4 as its base. The Z4 used to offer a manual gearbox only with the 4-cylinder version. The 6-cylinder engine, which it shares with the Supra, is exclusively available with the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. As both cars share the platform and powertrains, the Supra was not available with a manual transmission either. Gazoo Racing aims to change that soon with an “all-new, tailor-made manual transmission”.

Toyota GR Supra – Powertrain

Powering the Toyota GR Supra is a 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbochargers with a 24-valve dual overhead camshaft valvetrain. The machine also features variable valve timing and an electric wastegate. It produces a maximum power of 387 PS and 498 Nm of maximum torque. The gearbox is a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The rear-wheel-drive setup also gets an electronically controlled rear differential.

Toyota GR Supra – Indian Launch

The Indian launch of the GR Supra by Toyota has been rumoured for a long time. However, there has been no confirmation about Toyota launching it. If Toyota brings the GR Supra to India, it will come as a Completely-Built-Unit (CBU) under the 2500 cars import rule. Under this rule, a manufacturer can import up to 2500 cars to the country without homologation.
