Tesla will be entering the Indian market and the brand is planning to open a shop soon. A media report suggests that the technology brand and electric carmaker is currently scouting for spaces to open sales and service channels. The brand plans to open shop in three cities in the initial phase before it further expands its network in the Indian market. Reports suggest that Tesla has chosen Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru as the first three cities to open its dealership and service centre.
Tesla Sales and Service
Tesla will be looking out for a 20,000 to 30,000 sq. ft size area to open the sales and service network. The brand has also recruited a former executive of ‘Invest India’ the country’s investment promotion body, Mr Manuj Khurana, to lead Tesla’s policy and business development in the country ahead of the brand’s launch, sources said. Sources suggest that on average luxury car showrooms are the size of approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq. ft or smaller as real estate prices in Mumbai and New Delhi are one of the highest in the world.
Tesla Registers Company in India
On 8th January 2021, Tesla Inc formed an Indian subsidiary called Tesla India Motors And Energy Private Limited and registered the new company in Bengaluru Karnataka. Documents from MCA also reveal that the company has appointed three Directors – Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Feinstein for the Indian subsidiary. David Jon Feinstein is the Global Senior Director of Tesla, Vaibhav Taneja is the current Chief Accounting Officer at Tesla Inc. and Venkatrangam Sreeram is an entrepreneur associated in the automotive aftermarket.
Tesla’s Research & Development Plan in India
According to speculation, Tesla is planning to set up a research and development centre in India. But it is still unknown where the brand will set up the R&D centre. According to reports Tesla is in talks with the state of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat for the R&D centre plans.
