Tesla management coming to India to meet government officials

Exciting news for Tesla lovers here in India. We are aware that Tesla had axed its India debut plans back in May 2022. But the good news is that Tesla is now reportedly back in talks with the central government. And this time around, they are thinking of setting up shop here. And even there are talks of setting up a manufacturing unit in the country. This will cater to the manufacturing of its electric cars both for export as well as domestic sales. As per reports the US-based automaker had talks with Indian government officials on May 17.

Tesla Plans Of Setting Up A Factory In India

This proposition comes in after India last year refused to accept Tesla’s request to reduce import tax on cars. Currently, the taxes stand at as high as 100 per cent on CBUs costing above USD 40,000. Thus, India wanted Tesla to manufacture cars locally. But on the contrary, Tesla hinted at testing the waters first with imports. And thus it was a dead end and the discussions ended in a stalemate.

Which Tesla Models Could Make Their Way?

As we understand, Tesla did not talk about the subject of the reduction of import taxes with officials. In its latest discussion. But there are talks of establishing a factory. But as we understand we do not have any offer details on either the location or the investment. There were also talks on which models could potentially make their way into the Indian market. In fact, there were also talks of setting up a battery manufacturing plant in the future.

Local Sourcing Could Be The Key

As per sources, the senior executives from Tesla also spoke to the government on local sourcing. This will include local sourcing of components and other matters. To further assert the news, Tesla is reportedly also seeking advice on how to avail of the local Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
