Tesla accepts Model 3 rear bumper could fall off when driving in rain

In a service bulletin, Tesla Inc. has acknowledged that the rear bumper, mid aero composite panels and front underbody panels could get damaged in instances of waterlogged roads. In rare instances, the rear fascia might detach from the vehicle and harnesses and/or body fasteners/mounts. These components have been identified from the Tesla Model 3 vehicles built at the Fremont Factory before May 21, 2019.

Apart from Tesla’s official service bulletin, several reports on the National Highway Traffic  Safety Administration also confirm that the rear bumper and some underbody components may fall off while the Model 3 is driven through standing water on a road or highway with poor drainage during rains. The repair bulletin further states that it does not cover damage caused to the vehicle by flood or deep water, including flooding.

The technology company will be covering these instances under warranty but other than the above-mentioned instances, Tesla has informed that accidents, collisions, intentional abuse, road debris, potholes, driving off-road, normal wear & tear or any other damage unrelated to the specified condition will not be covered under the warranty. Furthermore, Tesla will check for symptoms and if the vehicle is eligible the brand will replace the rear fascia diffuser with one that has a covered opening for a tow hitch and comes with an improved wade performance. Also, the brand will make sure that the vehicle is updated with front aero shield (1104312-00-B or later) and mid aero shield (1104313-00-B or later), and replace or repair any other component that was damaged as necessary.
