A test mule of Tata Tigor was recently spotted in Mumbai, which seems to be the turbo engine under testing. Tata is very likely to offer a turbocharged petrol engine for Tigor to take on the likes of other compact sedans like Hyundai Aura, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ford Aspire and Honda Amaze.
The Tata Tigor and Tiago were previously equipped with a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine under the JTP edition. Recently, the Jayem Automotive was taken over by Tata Motors and now has 100% ownership in JTSV. The 1.2-litre Revotron turbo petrol does the duty in the Nexon and the Tigor is expected to get this engine, however, we might see a different engine mapping for the Tigor. The gearbox option should have the 5-speed manual option and we are yet not sure if there would be an option for an automatic transmission.
After the discontinuation of the JTP siblings, Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP and an increase in demand for the turbo-petrol powertrain in the market, Tata is likely to bring the turbo petrol engines again but will target efficiency rather than power. The interior is yet to be revealed, but it is expected to get some sporty touches as seen in the JTP edition. There could be changes in the suspension to suit the handling and the brand is likely to tune it to match the performance of the car. Tata is also working on bringing in a new turbo engine for its premium hatchback the Altroz, which is selling in quite good numbers.
Currently, Tata Tigor has 6 variants on sale and all of them are powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor which makes 85 HP of power and 114 Nm of torque. There are two gearbox options available – a 5-speed manual and an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). The car has scored 4 stars in the Global NCAP rating on the adult protection and has a host of safety features like airbags and ABS standard across the trims. It comes with a warranty of 2 years or 75,000 km whichever is earlier.
