Written by Nizam Shaikh

Tata Motors India has released a new teaser for its upcoming car. According to the teaser, the brand is planning to launch a new CNG powered Tata Tiago in the Indian market. Through the micro-blogging site Twitter, Tata Motors Cars states, “Get ready for the game ChaNGer this 2022!”. The letters C, N and G, have been highlighted, leading us to believe that Tata will launch a new CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine option on its entry-level cars. The company has also revealed a silhouette of a small hatchback which appears to be the Tata Tiago.

Tata Tiago – Technical Specifications

Powering the Tata Tiago is a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine. The engine produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. Tata also offers the Tiago with both a 5-speed manual as well as a 5-speed AMT transmission. Tata claims that the Tiago returns an ARAI mileage between 19 and 23 kmpl. In the CNG engine avatar, the Tiago might produce slightly less power and torque compared to the petrol engine, but the mileage is likely to increase considerably. Reports suggest that the Tiago will offer around INR 1.60 to INR 1.70 per km.

CNG Vehicles in India

Currently, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are the only brand’s that offer CNG powered vehicles in the Indian market, with Maruti Suzuki leading the CNG segment with multiple offerings across segments. CNG vehicles, especially in the entry-level and MPV segments, have become quite popular, especially in metro cities, thanks to their affordability. The sharply rising cost of petrol and diesel in India has also led to a lot of commuters adopting CNG fuel as an option. Customers are also able to easily switch to petrol in case a CNG filling station is not available, adding to the versatility of the bi-fuel vehicle.

Apart from the Tata Tiago, reports suggest that Tata is also planning to introduce the CNG versions of the Tigor compact sedan and the Tata Altroz. Currently, Tata could be testing Altroz and the Tigor with CNG powertrain for launch later this year.
