Tata targets 5-star crash test safety rating for all cars

In a significant move towards enhancing vehicle safety, Tata Motors has set a new benchmark in the Indian automotive industry. The company aims to achieve a 5-star safety rating for all its cars, as per the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) standards.

Nexon Facelift: A Testament to Tata’s Safety Commitment

The recently launched facelift of the Tata Nexon compact SUV has scored a commendable five stars in the GNCAP crash test. The Nexon tested by GNCAP was a 2024 model and was made in India. The SUV scored 32.22 points out of 34 in adult protection and 44.52 points out of 49 in child protection. This is a significant achievement, considering the first generation of Nexon was the first Indian car to score a five-star rating in the GNCAP crash test back in 2018.

The bodyshell integrity and footwell area were reported as stable by Global NCAP. The Nexon was also equipped with side impact protection doors. The protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. The driver’s and passenger’s chests showed adequate protection.

Safety: A Comprehensive Approach by Tata

In terms of safety features, the Nexon comes with 6 airbags, an electronic stability program, ISOFIX mounts, rear parking sensors, tilt and collapsible steering, central locking, and hill hold control1. The Nexon meets UN127 and GTR9 requirements for pedestrian protection as standard. The model also complies with GlobalNCAP’s ESC requirements and offers seatbelt reminders in all seating positions.

With this feat, all new Tata SUVs have now received the GNCAP 5-star rating certifications, raising the bar for safer SUVs in India. Tata’s commitment to safety is not just a statement but a testament to their dedication to delivering vehicles that not only surpass expectations but also prioritizes the safety of every passenger on the road.

Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, Tata Motors Chief Product Officer Mohan Savarkar said that while the company’s vehicles are already constructed with structural safety that exceeds regulations, it plans to enhance these features even further by making six airbags standard on all of its models.

This means that the Tiago and Tigor which have scored 4-star rating in their previous tests, stand a chance of scoring 5-stars once they are tested again with the new equipment. Once Tata achieves to pull this off, it would set a benchmark for all other manufacturers.
