Tata Motors Limited has disclosed its sales data for August 2023, reporting a total of 78,010 units sold across its various vehicle categories. This represents a slight decrease compared to the same period last year. This figure includes sales of both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles.
In the passenger vehicle segment, which includes models like Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, Harrier, Safari, and their electric vehicles (EVs), sales declined to 45,513 units in August 2023, marking a 3.5 percent decrease from the 47,166 units sold in August 2022. Notably, exports in this category surged by 127 percent to 420 units in August 2023, up from 185 units in August 2022. Overall passenger vehicle sales, which also incorporate the company’s electric vehicle lineup, fell by 3 percent to 45,933 units in August 2023 compared to 47,351 units in August 2022.
In the commercial vehicle segment, Tata Motors saw improvements in various categories. Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) truck sales increased to 9,000 units in August 2023, marking a 14.4 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to the 7,865 units sold in August 2022. Intermediate and Light Commercial Vehicle (ILMCV) truck sales also grew to 5,207 units in August 2023, up from 4,968 units in August 2022, translating to a 4.8 percent YoY increase.
Additionally, passenger carriers within the commercial vehicle segment experienced a 29.9 percent YoY growth, with 2,986 units sold in August 2023 compared to 2,299 units in August 2022. However, sales of Small Commercial Vehicles (SCV) for cargo and pickup decreased by 4.4 percent, dropping from 29,313 units in August 2022 to 13,555 units in August 2023.
Overall, total domestic commercial vehicle sales increased by 4.9 percent, reaching 30,748 units in August 2023 from 29,313 units in August 2022, while commercial vehicle exports declined by 39 percent to 1,329 units in August 2023 from 2,179 units in August 2022. Total commercial vehicle sales (domestic and exports) showed a 1.9 percent YoY growth, totaling 32,077 units in August 2023, compared to 31,492 units in August 2022.
In the domestic market, Tata Motors recorded a total of 76,261 units sold in August 2023, which is only slightly lower than the 76,479 units sold in August 2022, reflecting a minimal year-on-year change of 0 percent. It’s worth noting that these sales figures encompass the performance of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, both subsidiaries of Tata Motors Limited.
Tata Motors made notable strides in the Electric Vehicles (EV) segment, with combined sales of EVs, including both imported (IB) and domestic models, reaching 6,236 units in August 2023. This represents a substantial 54.9 percent YoY growth.
