Tata Motors recently introduced the Punch micro-SUV in the Indian market. The brand is set to disrupt the segment with first in segment features such as multiple engine drive modes and ‘Traction Pro’, multi-terrain modes. The car also comes with an SUV-like stance and dimensions as well as cruise control. This enables the Punch to rival more than its intended segment. But today’s technical specification comparison will be limited to the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, the Indo-Japanese brand’s urban SUV.
While Tata has not revealed the price of the Punch SUV, bookings for the same are now open. Customers can book the Tata Punch SUV by putting down an amount of INR 21,000. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis starts at INR 5.10 lakh ex-showroom, which goes up to INR 7.47 lakh ex-showroom. Both brands only offer a petrol engine.
Tata Motors boast that the Punch extensively uses High Strength Steel and underpins the proven ALFA-ARC platform. The ALFA platform made its debut with the Altroz, which has received full 5-stars for safety by the Global NCAP. Rumours are the Punch has claimed 5-stars for safety at the Global NCAP, but official results are still pending at the time of publishing this article.
For safety, the Punch comes with Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD and Corner Safety Control. The brand also offers a Reverse Parking Camera, a Parametric Alarm System, seat belt reminders, ISOFIX Child seats, and a tyre punch repair kit. The brand offers the Punch with a segment-first – Brake Sway Control as well.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis comes with Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) for effective crash energy absorption and dispersion. Maruti Suzuki Ignis also complies with pedestrian protection norms. The car also comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child anchorage system, reverse sensors, etc.
Powering the Punch is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The Revotron series engine comes with Tata’s latest Dyna-Pro technology. The new engine features a ram-air intake system that helps improve both performance and efficiency. The engine belts out 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The Tata Punch comes with both manual and automatic options; a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox.
Powering the Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated VVT petrol engine. The BS6 compliant engine produces 83 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The brand also offers a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT transmission option. Maruti Suzuki also offers a Smart Hybrid system on the Ignis that provides electric torque assist to the engine, thereby improving its efficiency.
The Tata Punch measures 3827mm in length, 1742mm in width and 1615mm in height. The micro-SUV comes with a roomy wheelbase of 2445mm and offers 190mm of ground clearance as well as 366-litres of boot space. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis, on the other hand, measures 3700mm in length, 1690mm in width and 1595mm in height. The Ignis gets 2435mm of wheelbase and a 260-litre boot.
The Tata Punch comes with features such as projector headlamps, LED DRLs, and LED taillamps. The brand also offers chunky side claddings on the Punch and signature 90-degree opening doors for easy ingress-egress. The Punch also comes with a 7-inch instruments cluster and 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple Carplay. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis also comes with projector headlamps, U-shaped LED daytime running lights and rounded fog lamps. The car features a 17.78cm SmartPlay Studio infotainment system with voice recognition and cloud connectivity.
