Tata Nexon Electric to launch in 2020, will be cheaper than Hyundai Kona

At the 74th Annual General Meeting, Tata has revealed that they are working on a pure electric version of the Nexon compact-SUV. The Tata Nexon has gained a strong market hold in India with the SUV-coupe design, and it sure does look good. By a Tata car standard, the Nexon is probably the most funky looking product in their portfolio.

Tata already has a fully functional Tigor EV in place, but a more powerful iteration is in the pipeline. The Nexon EV is also another project currently in development and this will not be a hybrid, but a full electric compact-SUV. Meanwhile, Mahindra is also expected to be working on full electric version of the XUV300.

Although the project is now official, we have no concrete details about the battery to be used, the driving range that the Nexon EV will have and other feature changes. The Tata Nexon is also expected to get a facelift in 2020, so most likely, the EV will be launched at the same time. On the 2020 model, especially on the Tata Nexon EV, we expect full LED headlamp and tail lamps, front grille masked to get ride of the mesh as no engine cooling is necessary, aerodynamic body panels for better efficiency and less drag, new alloy wheels and the likes.

In the real world, we expect the Tata Nexon to have roughly 250-300 km driving range on a full charge. The Hyundai Kona is another SUV which is all-electric, and claims 454 km of driving range. However, the Hyundai Kona is not made in India. The Nexon hence will be significantly cheaper than the Hyundai Kona, so expect pricing of the Nexon to be in the ball park of INR 15 – 18 lakh, subsidies aside.

As of now, the Tata Nexon comes with turbocharged petrol and diesel engines both of which produce 110 PS of power.
