Tata could be planning to introduce a new mid-size SUV based on the much-popular Nexon compact SUV. However, reports suggest that the brand will be extending the overall length of the new SUV Coupe and will measure around 4.3 metres with a 50mm increase in the wheelbase brought by a change in the wheel geometry. Therefore, the new SUV will sit in the mid-SUV segment. Tata could name the new SUV Nexon Coupe thanks to the coupe-esque styling and the tapering rear end.
Other aesthetic features on the Nexon Coupe could also get a refresh to distinguish the Coupe-SUV from the standard easily. Tata is also likely to offer a new powertrain on the larger Nexon Coupe to justify its size and competition. As the car will sit in the mid-size bracket, using the 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit also does not make any sense in terms of tax benefits. The brand is also likely to introduce a battery-electric version of the Nexon Coupe, which could get a more powerful motor and a higher capacity battery pack compared to the Nexon EV. The car could aptly be called the Nexon Coupe EV.
Powering the Nexon Coupe could be a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. The engine is likely to develop around 160 Hp of power and will be easily capable of propelling the higher demands from the larger SUV. The brand is also likely to offer the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine from the Tata Nexon to cater to diesel engine aficionados. Recently, reports suggested that Tata is planning to upgrade the Nexon EVs battery to a 40 kWh pack from its current 30.2 kWh unit. This could make its way onto the Nexon Coupe EV.
The new Tata Nexon Coupe could be Tata’s much anticipated Blackbird. Tata could unveil the new SUV at a virtual event as the Auto Expo 2022 stands cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
