Tata Nano coming back as an electric compact car?

Written by Kanad Kalasur

According to a media report, Tata might be considering bringing back the Nano, albeit in an electric guise. The Indian carmaker could bring in the people mover with some major changes to original car including the suspension and tyres.

An electric Nano?

There are two main reasons for thinking about an electric Nano. The first one is Tata’s aggressive push into the EV segment. Tata Motors has an ambitious goal of selling 1,00,000 units of EVs in the next fiscal year. In the current year, Tata has already surpassed the 24,000 EV sales mark. In the same period last year, the total EVs sold stood at 19,500.

The second reason could be the fact that Tata’s are looking to recoup the investments made in the Nano project.

Production plans for an electric Nano

If the plans to revive the Nano reach the design board, industry sources report that Tata could resume its talks with the Tamil Nadu Government to acquire Ford’s Maraimalai Nagar plant, on the outskirts of Chennai.

Tata has also plans to launch 10 new EVs in the next 5 years. The Concepts Curvv and Avinya were showcased earlier this year while the most affordable EV – Tiago EV was launched as well.

Current Tata EVs on sale

At present Tata’s electric portfolio consists of electric Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV and the Xpress-T EV.

Tata Motors has just crossed a new milestone. Over 35,000 Nexon EVs have been sold by the Indian carmaker. To announce this, Tata has released a cheeky tweet targeting the Mahindra XUV400, another upcoming EV rival. However, the Mahindra EV is some time away from going into production. Tata has tweeted that 35,000 is greater than 00.
