Tata Motors reveals Altroz EV electric car in India a Auto Expo 2020

Tata Motors at the Auto Expo 2020 showcased the near-production model of the Altroz EV which is based on the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Tata Altroz hatchback and underpinned by the brand’s ALFA architecture. The brand had revealed the Altroz EV at the Geneva Motor show in 2019 alongside the ICE Altroz. The Altroz EV is expected to be launched in India by the end of this year.

On the exterior, the Altroz EV replicates its ICE sibling in terms of its design and dimensions but has its own distinguishing features such as a closed-off grille design, tri-arrow design air dam, splitter style bumper, an EV badge on the grille, teal accents around the headlights, teal highlighted new alloy wheels and the Tata badge on the blacked-out area of the tailgate.

On the Interior, a rotary knob drive selector sits in place of the gear lever and the interiors feature an island type touchscreen infotainment system, rotary controls for the climate control, tri-arrow themed seat upholstery, etc.

The powertrain is likely to be borrowed from the recently launched Tata Nexon EV which is powered by a Liquid-Cooled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor coupled to an IP67 rated 30.2 kWh lithium-ion liquid-cooled battery pack. Together it develops 129 PS of power and 245 Nm of torque mated to a single-speed transmission. The Nexon EV’s claimed range is 312 km and we expect the Altroz EV will have similar range.

Now to put things into perspective, the Tata Altroz hatchback with the Internal Combustion Engine is powered by a BS6 compliant 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that makes 86 PS power and 113 Nm of torque and another BS6 compliant 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine that produces 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque.

In terms of safety, the Altroz hatchback received 5 stars at the Global NCAP for crash safety and features dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, reverse parking camera, ISOFIX child seat anchorage system, parking assistant and the automotive standard features such as seatbelt reminder, over-speed alert etc.
