Tata Motors recently launched its most affordable EV in the Indian market, the Tiago EV. With the latest launch, Tata Motors states that it has completed Phase I of the brand’s 3-step electrification journey. Thus, making the Tiago EV the last Gen-1 EV from the Indian marque.
In April 2022, Tata Motors unveiled the CURVV Concept. And at the end of the same month, the brand unveiled the Avinya pure EV concept. Both concepts were a preview of what to expect from future Tata products. The CURVV electric SUV concept previewed the brand’s Gen-2 architecture, while the Avinya previewed the Gen-3 architecture.
At the launch of Tiago EV, the Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles division, Shailesh Chandra, stated that it will be the last Gen-1 product. He added that Tata Motors will now enter Generation-2.
Tata Motors’ Gen-1 products are quick conversions of its existing platforms and fitting battery packs while making sure they are cost-effective. As per Shailesh Chandra, Tata Motors’ strategy is to evolve with electrification. Thus, because of the low market size, Tata has ICE conversations to deliver products profitably at lower volumes. For example, the latest launch, Tata Tiago EV, features a custom split-battery pack. Tata has nestled this battery pack in place of the fuel tank as well as the boot floor. However, there’s no space for a spare tyre because of this.
The Gen-2 products will still use ICE architecture. However, Tata will extensively modify it to create more space for a bigger battery pack. Hence, we can also expect a flat floor in Gen-2 products from Tata. On the other hand, Gen-3 products will be born-electric vehicles.
According to sources, Tata is currently working on four Gen-2 products. Shailendra Chandra did not elaborate on what these products will be. But he stated that some of them will be from current nameplates, and some of them will be new. Thus, it is likely that Tata could introduce the electric versions of the Altroz and the Punch. The other two could be the Sierra EV and the production version of the CURVV concept.
