Tata Motors, through the micro-blogging site Twitter revealed that the brand would soon be launching the automatic transmission variant of the popular Tata Altroz. The hot hatchback is currently available only in a 5-speed manual transmission variant. The new automatic version of the Altroz will help the brand better compete with the Hyundai i20 and the Volkswagen Polo. Both these come with an automatic transmission option. While the official handle confirms via the query that the brand will launch the AT version of the Altroz, no launch timeline is currently available. The brand also suggests to “stay tuned” to the official Tata Motor Cars website as well as social media handles for the latest updates.
In the past, reports have suggested that Tata is testing the automatic transmission Altroz in India. The brand is likely to offer a dual-clutch automatic transmission on the Altroz. Spyshots in the past have suggested that the Altroz automatic could feature a 7-speed wet-dual-clutch Schaeffler unit. The brand has also been spied with a Lumax gear selector on the automatic development mule. Also, reports suggested that the brand is also testing a dry-clutch unit from Punch Powertrains. However, it remains to be seen what exactly Tata will be offering on the Altroz.
Currently, the Tata Altroz comes with a BS6 compliant 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The engine produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The motor is matched to a 5-speed manual transmission. The brand also offers a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. The oil motor produces 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. However, reports suggest that Tata will offer the Automatic version on the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged direct injection petrol motor. The turbo-petrol engine produces 110 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque. Currently, the Altroz i-Turbo with the turbo-petrol motor also comes with a 5-speed manual transmission.
