To make the safest cars as per segment standards has been a priority for Tata Motors in the recent past. While the Nexon got huge applause for its safety rating, it garnered incremental sales thanks to that fact. Now, the upcoming Tata Altroz hatchback has also received a 5-star Global NCAP crash test rating which will surely turn more eyeballs when the car is launched in the coming days. The Altroz from Tata Motors is a premium hatchback here to rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz, etc.
The car put through the crash test was the right-hand drive Altroz model with a kerb weight of 1,401 kg in a 5-door design layout. The Tata Altroz scored 16.13 / 17 in adult occupant safety while it scored 29 / 49 for child safety. That equates to 5-star safety rating for adults and 3-star safety rating for child safety. The cars were crash tested at a speed of 64 kmph.
The body shell overall of the Tata Altrozz was rated as stable to keep the occupants safe. The safety equipment on the variant crash tested included seat belt reminder, ISOFIX, ABS, front driver and passenger airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner. Had it come with side, head & knee airbags, the rating would have been even better. But it is already great nevertheless.
The Tata Altroz in the crash impact provided good head and neck protection to front occupants. The chest area for both also showed adequate level of crash protection. The body shell Global NCAP claimed could handle further impact, and still keep the users safe. Footwell area too was stable and there was good protection for the driver knees.
The 3-year old child dummy in a child seat with ISOFIX prevented forward movement during the crash, but the backrest of the rear seat bench reduced the protection overall because it unlatched during impact. The 18-month old dummy with ISOFIX and support leg also received good crash test rating.
Achieving 5-star crash test rating for the 2nd time, first with the Nexon and now with Altroz is a landmark milestone for Tata Motors. This is proof that the ALFA platform which Tata Motors has developed to build multiple car body types is stable and safe to meet the safety requirements in the near future.
