Tata Motors recently launched the new Altroz DCA, a new Dual Clutch Automatic transmission. The Altroz DCA is the world’s first transmission with planetary gearbox and liquid cooling. Its competitors in the hot hatchback segment include the Hyundai i20, which also comes with a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), as well as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. However, the Baleno comes with an AMT gearbox which is an Automated Manual Transmission. In this comparison, we pin the Tata Altroz DCA against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT as well as the Hyundai i20 DCT.

The Tata Altroz DCA comes in five variants XMA+, XTA, XZA, XZA(o) and XZA+. The brand also offers two Dark edition variants, XTA Dark and XZA Dark. The starting price of the Tata Altroz DCA is INR 8.01 lakh ex-showroom. While the top-spec Dark edition comes with a price tag of INR 9.90 lakh ex-showroom. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes with four variants – Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. But the entry-level Sigma does not come with the AMT transmission option. The Delta variant with AMT gearbox comes with a price tag of INR 7.69 lakh ex-showroom, while the top-spec Alpha comes with a price tag of INR 9.49 lakh. The Hyundai i20 with the DCT transmission starts at INR 9.76 lakh ex-showroom. While in the N Line spec, the i20 comes with a price tag of 11.97 lakh ex-showroom. 

Tata Altroz DCA Vs. Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT Vs. Hyundai i20 DCT – Engine and Gearbox

The Tata Altroz DCA comes with a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder engine. The motor produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The engine is matched to a Dual Clutch Automatic gearbox with boasts to offer 35% fewer mechanical components and a single layshaft. The new DCA gearbox also comes with features like Auto Park, Dust Filters, self-detection for malfunctions as well as self-repair capability. 

On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes with a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), which Maruti Suzuki like to call AGS (Auto GearShift). The Hyundai i20 comes with a 7-speed DCT gearbox with the N Line model having paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The Tata Altroz DCA measures 3990mm in length, 1755mm in width and 1523mm in height. The car comes with a 2501mm wheelbase, 165mm ground clearance and 345-litres of boot space. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT measures 3990mm in length, 1745mm in width, and 1500mm in height. The hatchback comes with a wheelbase of 2520mm and 318-litres of boot space. The Hyundai i20 measures 3995mm in length, 1775mm in width and 1505mm in height. The car comes with 2580mm of wheelbase.

The Tata Altroz DCA comes with features such as Wet Clutch with Active Cooling, Shift-by-wire, Machine Learning, Auto Park Lock and Self Healing. Apart from this, the car comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system iRA Connected technology. The Baleno comes with a Heads-up Display (First-in-Segment), SmartPlay Pro+ 9-inch touchscreen, 360-degree camera etc. The Hyundai i20 comes with features such as twin concept fully digital instruments cluster and touchscreen infotainment system, Bluelink connected features, smart air-purifier etc.
