Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India (HMSI) has announced plans to build a dedicated electric motorcycle manufacturing plant in India by 2028. The new facility will be located in Karnataka, adjacent to Honda’s existing two-wheeler plant in Narasapura, near Bengaluru. Why this move? Honda’s decision to establish a dedicated electric motorcycle plant aligns with the Make in India initiative. The company aims to capture a significant market share in the world’s largest two-wheeler market. The new factory will produce a variety of electric motorcycle models, leveraging Honda’s expertise in internal combustion engine technology. The new plant will initially focus on producing a commuter bike equipped with a 4kWh battery, equivalent to a 100cc motorcycle. Honda plans to expand its range to include mid-sized motorcycles and other models. The company is working with battery manufacturers to develop specifications for stable procurement. Honda Electric Vehicles Honda has already entered the electric vehicle market in India with the launch of two electric scooters, the Activa E and the QC1. The Activa E features swappable batteries, while the QC1 comes with a fixed battery pack. Honda plans to roll out its battery-swapping service in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Honda Electric Competitors Honda faces competition from other electric two-wheeler manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Ather, Ola Electric and TVS Motor Company. These companies have already established a strong presence in the electric vehicle market with their range of scooters and motorcycles. Honda’s move to manufacture electric motorcycles in India is a significant step towards sustainable mobility.
