Written by Kanad Kalasur

Toyota and Suzuki is working on a new small sports car. The Best Car magazine has reported that the car would have a front-engine configuration and would probably be powered by a 1.0-litre, turbocharged 3-cylinder unit.

Toyota-Suzuki’s small sports car : More details

The car would weigh around 1,000 kg. In terms of dimensions, this sports car is said to be bigger than the Miata and the 3rd-gen MR2. It will measure 4,200 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,220 mm tall. The wheelbase is set at 2,550 mm. This makes the car not just bigger than the MX-5, but also significantly lighter as well. The turbocharged 1.0-litre unit will develop 120 HP and almost 200 Nm of peak torque. In comparison, the Mazda MX-5 has a 1.5-litre engine that puts out 129 HP and 150 Nm.

Suzuki will be developing the engine along with the front suspension on this small sports car. The present Yaris’ suspension will be worked upon and adapted to the new car.

In terms of styling, we can expect the new car to borrow design cues from Daihatsu Copen. The car will have only two seats and will have the T-badge.

Toyota’s Sports EV concept

Back in 2021, Toyota surprised everyone by showcasing the Sports EV. This is a conceptual sports car with an electric powertrain. It had Gazoo Racing badging and many of us thought of the car to be the spiritual successor of the MR2. The car features large air intakes, small overhangs and large amounts of carbon fibre. The roof top could be removable.

Not much details are known about this as well as its future.

Pricing of the new Toyota-Suzuki’s small sports car

The car is expected to be priced around the US$ 16,500-21,000 range, but it is still very early to comment on the exact details.
