Suzuki planning 125cc Katana 125R

Written by Parichay Malvankar

It is that time of the year when we hear plenty of rumours about new motorcycles on the cards for the next year. One interesting update which as surfaced on the internet suggests that Suzuki might be considering to make a small capacity Katana motorcycle. As we all know, the Katana nameplate dates back to 1979 when it first made a debut but has now been resurrected as a modern classic. The same design philosophy could trickle down to the mass market 125cc segment as per rumours.

The current Suzuki Katana is powered by a 999cc, liquid-cooled, 4-cylinder motor producing 150 PS of power and 108 Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed gearbox. Reports online claim that based on the Suzuki GSX-S125, there could be a 125cc Katana model in the pipeline which could be revealed sometime in 2020 at one of the major motorcycle expo. The GSX-S125 is a roadster motorcycle powered by a 125cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC motor which could be shared with this rumoured Katana 125. This motor is capable of producing 15 PS and 11.50 Nm.

This Katana 125 however could be restricted to international markets to cater to newbie riders as per their riding licence requirements. For India, if such a bike is considered, it would be based on the Suzuki Gixxer. But then again, that is wishful thinking that Suzuki might consider such a product for India. However, the brand has indeed moved their focus towards premium two-wheelers for the Indian market as the mass segment has very stiff competition.

So, does a 125cc Suzuki Katana sound interesting to you? Would a 150cc Suzuki Katana for India make sense to you?
