Suzuki Jimny is being discontinued overseas

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Suzuki could be planning to discontinue the Jimny SUV in the European market. The company had announced this move in the past when the stringent European emission norms were announced in the past. Currently, the Suzuki Jimny uses the same K15B engine as the one sold in India. However, the brand could discontinue the Jimny from Europe this year and replace it with an all-electric model next year.

Emission Norms

According to reports, the Suzuki Jimny which is sold in the N1 category as a commercial vehicle in many European markets. The Jimny reportedly emits 154 g/km or 170 g/km of CO2 emissions depending on the transmission and the fleet average figures should around 95 g/km. The brand has already stopped taking order in most European markets.

Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate

Reports also suggest that in the UK, due to the Zero-Emission Vehicle mandate, which forces manufacturers to sell an increasing proportion of electric vehicles in the next decade or pay a penalty of GBP 15,000 on every ICE car sold above the permitted proportion, is the reason why Suzuki decided to pull out of Europe.

All-Electric Jimny

However, Suzuki plans to offset its carbon emissions by introducing more electric vehicles in the European market. According to sources, the brand will be introducing the all-electric Jimny next year in Europe. The Jimny EV will go on sale in the European market first before making it to other markets, revealed reports. The company also plans to introduce the eVX by the next year.
While the 3-door version of the Jimny may get discontinued in many markets due to the emission regulations, the 5-door version produced and sold in India is likely to continue with its sales. Also, the brand produces and exports the Jimny 5-door to various markets from India which is likely to continue.
