Suzuki electric two-wheeler in development for India

The Ministry of Road and Transport may be planning to ban internal combustion engine powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers from the year 2025. The two-wheelers and three-wheelers in question are likely to be under the 150cc displacement and this proposal has shaken the entire two-wheeler industry, as majority of their sales in India are in this segment.

Suzuki in India gets majority of the sales figures from the sub-150cc scooter range and developing an electric scooter makes sense as the brand wants to strengthen their commitment early on in the segment. In the current scenario, the electric vehicle market is very potent, especially the e-scooter segment as many competitors are entering the market and slowly big players are bound to enter soon. As the EV infrastructure strengthens in India new entrants will find it difficult to compete with already established brands.

The brand is likely to launch a scooter first, with motorcycles following at a later stage. Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) has already laced up their boots and an EV is expected to be in the development stage pretty soon. If it is true we expect to see the electric two-wheeler at least in a concept form at the 2020 Auto Expo.
