Spotted again, KTM‘s new 990 RC-R sports bike

KTM’s latest prototype, the 990 RC-R, has been spotted once more, fueling excitement among motorcycle enthusiasts. The 2025 KTM 990 RC-R, a highly anticipated addition to KTM’s lineup, has been seen undergoing rigorous testing on European roads. This prototype, which is set to enter production early next year, promises to bring a new level of performance and innovation to the supersport segment.

Design and Engineering Excellence

The 990 RC-R is based on the recently released KTM 990 Duke, sharing its 947cc parallel-twin engine. This engine is expected to deliver around 123 hp at 9500 rpm and 103 Nm of torque at 6750 rpm. However, the RC-R will feature several supersport-specific updates, including a new Akrapovič exhaust system designed to enhance high-rpm performance, making it more suitable for track use.

The chassis of the 990 RC-R has been meticulously engineered to provide superior stability and handling. It boasts a model-specific 25 degrees of rake, slightly more than the Duke, and a stiffened frame to manage stability during hard acceleration. The suspension system, provided by WP Apex, is expected to offer adjustable compression and rebound damping, ensuring optimal performance on both smooth racetracks and bumpy roads.

Ready to Race

True to KTM’s “Ready to Race” ethos, the 990 RC-R will make appearances as a wildcard entry in select European Supersport championships. This move not only showcases the bike’s competitive capabilities but also allows KTM to gather valuable data and feedback from real-world racing conditions.

In addition to the street-legal version, KTM has announced a track-only variant, the 990 RC-R Track. This model will strip away road-legal necessities to save weight and will feature a complete racing exhaust system, crash protection, and race-specific bodywork.

A Legacy of Performance

KTM’s return to the supersport segment marks a significant milestone for the brand. The company last produced a road-legal performance sports bike over fifteen years ago with the V-twin 1190 RC8 R. The new 990 RC-R aims to build on this legacy, combining Austrian engineering excellence with the ferocious racing DNA that KTM is known for.
