Skoda to launch new sedan in 2021 to rival Ciaz, City & Verna

Skoda has plans to build a new-generation Rapid which is long overdue a complete overhaul considering it has been quite a long time since its first-generation model was launched in 2011, in India. The next-generation Skoda Rapid is expected to launch in the next couple of years. It is still not clear if Skoda will continue to call it the ‘Rapid’ or it will succeed the model with a new name.

According to a media report, the next generation car will be based on Skoda’s MQB A0 IN platform. The brand is expected to launch the new-gen Skoda Rapid or its successor by the end of 2021. The new sedan car with the MQB A0 IN platform will compete with the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz & Hyundai Verna.

The next-generation car is expected to be a ‘Notchback’ styled sedan with features including LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, light weight diamond-cut alloy wheels and more; and Skoda is expected to retain their signature grille on the front.

On the interiors, the car is expected to get a third-generation Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB3) new touchscreen infotainment system with built-in satellite navigation along with AppleCarPlay and Android Auto integration. Also, an eSIM for internet connectivity on the go. The instrument console is expected to be a fully digital unit and the car could get a powered driver seat. In terms of safety, it is expected to get 6 – 7 airbags along with other electronics such as ABS with EBD as a standard part of the pack.

Though information on the technical specification of the car is scarce, it is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre, TSI, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine and a more powerful performance-oriented 1.5-litre, TSI-EVO, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. Both engines are expected to be matched to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The Skoda Rapid is the only car which is locally manufactured model in India and is expected to get a facelift yet again by March 2020.

The outgoing Rapid in India is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 104.6 PS of power and a 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine with 110.1 PS of power. Prices for the Skoda Rapid in India starts from INR 7,99,599 ex-showroom.
