Skoda has registered 5 names for the Indian car market; Konarq, Kliq, Karmiq, Kosmiq, and Kushaq. Skoda Is likely to launch 4 cars in the year 2021 each in mid-size SUV, SUV, C segment sedan and D segment sedan category. As per the nomenclature, Skoda has always named its SUV with starting with a ‘K’ and ending with a ‘Q’ like in Kodiaq, Karoq and we assume that the above names will be reserved for the SUV cars. With the proliferation of SUVs in the market, Skoda is all geared up with its new launched especially in the SUV segment to get a greater share of the pie.
The first launch which is scheduled around Q1 is a mid-size SUV based on VISION IN as showcased in the Auto Expo 2020. It will be underpinned by the MBQ AO IN platform which is developed for the Indian driving conditions. It is expected to be 4.2 metres in length with a wheelbase measuring 2,671 mm. The production-spec of the VISION IN will be powered by a 150 Hp, 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol motor with two gearbox options – manual and dual-clutch automatic. When launched this car will take on the hotly contested SUV segment in India with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster and more.
The next launch which is expected to take place in the Q2 is the fourth-generation Skoda Octavia. It has already been launched in the European market and the latest gen has done away with the iconic quad-headlight setup. The Kodiaq is also expected to be launched along with the new Octavia. Previously, the Kodiaq was powered by a 2.0-litre 150 Hp diesel motor which will be now replaced by a 190 Hp 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine.
Skoda has also confirmed that the 10-year-old Rapid will be replaced by a new mid-size sedan in late 2021. It will bigger than the current Rapid in size and will be based on the MBQ A0 platform and will be about 95% localised. The current 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol which also powers the Polo, Vento and current-gen Rapid will do the duty in that car as well.
