Skoda Auto has announced the discontinuation of the 1.5L manual transmission variants for its Kushaq and Slavia models. This decision marks a shift in the company’s strategy, focusing more on automatic transmissions for higher engine variants.
The Skoda Kushaq and Slavia, both launched under the India 2.0 project, have been pivotal in strengthening Skoda’s presence in the Indian automotive market. These models, built on the MQB A0 IN platform, have been well-received for their robust performance and advanced features. The 1.5L EVO TSI engine, known for its impressive power output of 148 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, has been a favorite among driving enthusiasts.
However, the manual variants of these models have seen a decline in demand. Most urban buyers prefer the convenience of automatic transmissions, leading to a strategic decision by Skoda to discontinue the 1.5L manual variants. This move aligns with the company’s goal to streamline its product offerings and focus on high-demand variants.
The discontinuation of the manual variants has elicited mixed reactions from the market. Enthusiasts who prefer the control and engagement of a manual gearbox are disappointed. The manual transmission offered a unique driving experience that appealed to a niche segment of buyers. However, the majority of customers, especially in metropolitan areas, have shown a clear preference for automatic transmissions due to their ease of use in heavy traffic conditions.
Skoda’s decision is also seen as a response to the competitive landscape. Volkswagen, Skoda’s sister brand, continues to offer manual variants of the Virtus and Taigun, which share the same platform and engine options as the Slavia and Kushaq. This could potentially drive some manual transmission enthusiasts towards Volkswagen’s offerings.
Despite the discontinuation of the manual variants, Skoda remains optimistic about the future of the Kushaq and Slavia. The company is focusing on enhancing the appeal of these models through new variants and features. The recently launched Monte Carlo and Sportline editions of the Slavia and Kushaq are expected to attract buyers with their sporty aesthetics and advanced features.
Moreover, Skoda continues to offer the 1.0L TSI engine with both manual and automatic transmission options, ensuring that customers still have a choice. The 1.0L engine, while less powerful than the 1.5L, provides a balanced performance suitable for everyday driving.
