Scania might set up bus plant in Nagpur

Anders Grundstromer, managing director of Scania Commercial Vehicles India Ltd. has revealed that Scania might set up a bus plant in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

This plan was revealed during the launch of the ethanol-run Scania bus pilot project. Scania had entered the Indian market in 2007 in a partnership with L&T. Scania Commercial Vehicles India Limited was established in 2011 and it launched buses under the Metro Link brand name. The first manufacturing facility was set up at Narsapura in Karnataka during October 2013.

The company is looking closely at the success rate of the ethanol-run pilot project. If they receive a positive response, the bus manufacturing facility will be set up in Nagpur. Scania has manufactured over 1,000 ethanol-fuelled buses which are plying on the streets of 12 countries such as Brazil, Sweden, Great Britain, Spain, South Africa etc.

Scania uses 95% of ethanol and 5% additives to turn it into automotive fuel. In India, 10% ethanol is being mixed with petrol whereas in some countries, 85% ethanol is mixed.

Scania also plans to introduce heavy trucks for the mining sector in the near future.
