Scania plans to begin production of its buses at their Indian manufacturing facility starting from next month. Scania has set up a Rs. 300 crore manufacturing facility near Bangalore.
Previously, the buses which were produced in Malaysia will now be produced domestically in India from August 2014. The Metrolink coaches between 13.7 and 14.5 metre sizes will have 100% localised bus body and the bus chassis will be 30% localised.
The plant is expected to have an initial production capacity of 1,500 buses. Scania expects to sell about 150 buses in India this year and 450 buses next year. Apart from this, the brand has set a target to sell 2,500 trucks and 1,000 buses per year during the next five years. As of date, only 35 buses have been sold.
5% market share of the premium bus segment in the next five years, and 10% by 2024 is the current target.
