SAIC Motor and Audi have announced a new joint development for electric vehicles. The Chinese-German duo has signed a memorandum of understanding to this end. The automakers aim to develop intelligent and electric vehicles.
As part of the plans, the largest Automaker in China will support Audi to speed up electric vehicle development. This will be done due to increased demand in China for electric and premium connected vehicles. Both the companies will work with their advantages and strengths to this end.
Meanwhile, SAIC Motor is looking to use the entire technological capability it has to this joint development for developing new cars.
Back in 204, SAIC launched its new development strategy. Under this, the fields of electrification, intelligent connectivity, sharing, and globalisation were considered. As a leader in the new energy vehicles along with connected car tech, SAIC planned to nurture new growth drivers by innovation and transformation.
SAIC has been the German carmaker’s partner in China. They have worked together prior and hence using that experience, they will move ahead in this new joint-venture. SAIC will additionally help fast track the development process of Audi’s next-gen EVs to get them to the market faster.
Founded back in 1955, the SAIC is one of the largest state-owned carmakers in China. The company sold 5.37 million cars in 2021 alone. The group makes cars under the brands such as IM, Maxus, MG, Roewe, Rising, Baojun, Wuling and more. Further, it also has joint ventures such as SAIC-Volkswagen (Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi) and SAIC-General Motors (Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac).
According to 2021 numbers, SAIC is also the third largest plug-in electric vehicle maker and the second largest BEV car manufacturer in the world.
Meanwhile, Audi is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Based in Ingolstadt, the company traces its history back to the late 1880s. Apart from making passenger cars, the company is also known for its presence in motorsports.
