Royal Enfield’s Managing Director – Siddharth Lal was recently spotted riding the company’s first-ever electric motorcycle on public roads. The test mule, which is set to be unveiled at the EICMA show this year, will most likely be showcased at Royal Enfield Motoverse as well.
The electric motorcycle retains the classic Royal Enfield neo-retro design, featuring a round LED headlight, tubular handlebar, and adjustable levers. The test mule also showcases a slim and low-slung build, with girder forks, alloy wheels with road-biased tyres, and an exposed rear fender. The bike’s design elements, such as the round LED indicators and minimalistic tank area, hint at a bobber-type approach.
While specific performance details are yet to be disclosed, the electric motorcycle is expected to offer a range comparable to Royal Enfield’s popular 350cc ICE motorcycles. The bike features a circular instrument cluster, which could be a connectivity-infused TFT unit similar to the Himalayan. The underpinnings include girder-type forks and a monoshock setup, providing a unique and retro riding experience.
This new motorcycle will most likely be called the ‘Flying Flea’. Royal Enfield has registered and trademarked the name right after the patent was registered. The Flying Flea was a Royal Enfield motorcycle which was popular during the World War II. These bikes used to be light in weight and used by soldiers to travel short distances. The motorcycles would be dropped on the battlefield with the help of parachutes. Royal Enfield teased the motorcycle in the same way hinting that this will most likely be called the Flying Flea.
Royal Enfield’s foray into the electric motorcycle segment is seen as a strategic move to tap into the growing demand for eco-friendly two-wheelers. The upcoming launch at EICMA is highly anticipated followed by the showcase of the motorcycle at the 2024 Motoverse. Currently, there are very few players in the electric motorcycle market.
