The newly launched CNG iterations of the Renault cars are not a factory fitment but a retrofit. The models that have been added with the option of a CNG kit include the Kwid, Kiger, and Triber. The pricing of the CNG kit for the Kwid and Triber is Rs 79,000 while the Kiger CNG can be had for Rs 75,000 in addition to the sticker price.

Being a retrofit means that any of the variants can be brought with a CNG option but the powertrain will be the 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The modest three-cylinder petrol engine produces 71 bhp and 96 Nm of peak torque, in the pure petrol form. Now, with the CNG fitment, these figures are likely to take a dip.

Nevertheless, Renault cars already do not have diesel engine options and the CNG fitment seems to be a good way of increasing sales volume. Mind you, the Kiger compact SUV has been doing decent sales numbers since its launch due to its spacious cabin and big car feel. Moreover, the Kwid and Triber CNG models are likely to become hit among new car buyers.

Besides the retrofit CNG kit option, Renault has not added any new colourways or features on the models to set them apart from the standard lineup. The company is hopeful to make an impact in the CNG market with the new models.

Our verdict

Renault India is consistently growing in a positive direction. The introduction of Kiger has proven to be a boon for the company’s fortune in India. Moreover, the next big product launch from Renault is going to be the Duster SUV, which has been a segment testament earlier.
