German luxury sports car manufacturer Porsche has launched its latest flagship of the 718 Cayman range called the GT4 RS. Based on customer demand and to pursue quicker lap times, Porsche has heavily reworked its existing Cayman GT4. Using the same engine from the GT3, Porsche plans to widen its sports car portfolio with the new GT4 RS.
Porsche has utilized carbon fibre, reinforced bonnet, and front wings on the GT4 RS with the key focus of reducing weight. At the front, the GT4 RS features new air vents on either side of the wheel arches for brake cooling. Porsche has also reworked the car’s aerodynamics by adding an adjustable front splitter and a swan-necked rear wing. Thanks to several weight-saving measures, the GT4 RS sports a power-to-weight ratio of 353 PS per tonne.
Additionally, the GT4 RS has been lowered by 30mm compared to the standard Cayman to increase downforce by 10%. The GT4 RS sports a unique side-window design with built-in air vents for engine cooling and enhanced induction noise. At the rear, the GT4 RS features a plastic-reinforced engine cover to reduce weight along with titanium-tipped exhausts. Porsche also offers the GT4 RS with an optional Weissach package that includes a titanium roll-cage and 20-inch magnesium wheels.
The GT4 RS’ interior features a motorsport-themed cockpit with a variety of weight-saving and driver-focussed elements. Porsche has utilized its Race-Tex interior decorative trim on the dashboard and center console which sports a satin carbon-weave finish. Similar to motorsport-derived race cars, the GT4 RS features door pull loops and lightweight carpets for weight saving. The optional, free-of-cost, ‘Clubsport Package’ for the GT4 RS’ includes a driver’s side six-point racing harness and a fire extinguisher.
Powering the GT4 RS is a motorsport-derived, 4.0-litre, naturally-aspirated, flat-six engine which produces 500 PS and 450 Nm. With a redline of 9000 RPM, the GT4 RS produces 80 PS more than the standard 718 Cayman GT4. The GT4 RS sports a top speed of 315 kmph and a 0-100 kmph time of 3.4 seconds.
Porsche has paired the engine to its signature 7-speed PDK automatic gearbox with no option for a manual gearbox. Thanks to the extensive engineering, the GT4 RS has lapped the infamous Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 4.51 seconds. Driven by ex-racer and brand ambassador Jorg Bergmeister, the GT4 RS is 23.6 seconds quicker than the standard GT4.
